Auras and Chakras - An Introduction to the Human Energy Field

Each of us is surrounded by a bubble-shaped energy field that is known by many different names - the aura, the etheric body, the light body, personal space, the energy field, energetic blueprint and so on and that has been understood in many ancient wisdom traditions, as well as having finally been recognised by quantum scientists.

Sacred images frequently portray the aura, or some part of it, either as a mandorla, an almond-shaped glow around the entire body of a deity, angelic being or saint, or as a halo around the head. However, the fact that these images are of particularly sacred beings does not mean that the rest of us less-enlightened beings do not have them; it is simply that it is often easier to see the aura of someone who is strongly aware of their divine connection, who meditates and is at peace with themselves and the world. Many people have their own first glimpse of a human aura in a healing or teaching environment; in the latter case the crown chakra (the bit of the aura around the head) is often quite visible as a white, silver or lilac glow around the teacher's head. So, within the aura, we have other more specific energy centres that keep the energy flowing and healthy in different parts of our system. These energy centres are commonly known as chakras (pronounced shack-ra (s)).

What is a chakra?

The word chakra comes from the Hindi and means "spinning wheel", in this case a spinning wheel, or vortex, of energy, because when they are functioning properly, this is how they seem to those who can see or feel energy. (Some will spin clockwise, others anti-clockwise). Most practioners use the Indian system of classification, that recognises seven primary chakras, or energy centres, in the body. There are, however, a large number of other subsidiary chakras that one can work with, those at the soles of the feet and palms of the hands amongst others. For our purposes, we shall look at the first seven and the colours generally associated with them. I have listed their Sanskrit names purely in case you come across these terms elsewhere.

The seven main chakras are listed in order as they go up the body:

If you already know that you can see energies or colours, simply look down your body and you may well see your chakras. If, on the other hand, this all sounds very weird to you, you could try closing your eyes and try to imagine the chakras on the "blank screen" in front of your forehead; however, there is no need to do this if doesn't feel comfortable to you, and you certainly shouldn't worry if you can't see a single hint of "swirling energy" or colours. The main thing for the moment is just to go along with me when I tell you that they are there, whether you can see or feel them or not - otherwise you'd be energetically dead!
