ESTABLISHING YOUR DOWSING REACTION

So, how does one start to dowse? The process is exactly the same no matter which tool one feels drawn to use: begin by programming the tool (or yourself) to give answers that you can de-code. In other words, if you can’t decipher the answers that your dowsing implement is giving you, frankly it’s not a lot of use. Dowsing is basically a binary system, producing “YES” or “NO” answers.

Therefore, as in the game of “Twenty Questions”, we need to ask closed questions that only require a “YES” or “NO” response. For the purposes of these instructions, I shall assume that we are working with the pendulum. Remember, this can be created by suspending any weighted item such as a metal nut or a pendant from a string or chain, normally between 5” or 12cm and 9” or 20cm for everyday indoor work, so long as the weight is free to move freely.

Holding the string or chain between the tips of the index finger and thumb of your dominant hand (i.e. your right hand if you’re right-handed or your left had if you’re left-handed), set the pendulum swinging gently back and forth in a straight line in front of your body. This is known as the “SEARCH” position, and is akin to having a car in “neutral”.

Now, relax, and say, “Show me “YES””. If you don’t detect an immediate response, don’t panic; it’s really important to try and stay relaxed, while holding the thought “YES” in your head. Sooner or later, you will almost certainly find that the pendulum changes the pattern of its swing. Many right-handed dowsers will find that the pendulum swings in a clockwise circular movement for “YES” (left-handed dowsers tend to have the opposite swing), but others will find a different motion. The actual shape or angle described by the pendulum is irrelevant; what is important is that you’ve just found your own positive dowsing reaction, so well done!

Now, you need to clear all thoughts of “YES” out of your mind, and returning the pendulum to the search position, ask to be shown your “NO” reaction. Again, this may be an anti-clockwise circle, or it may be something completely different. I have even had someone find that the pendulum came to a dead halt for “NO”. The main thing to be aware of at this stage is that it is a clearly defined reaction that is quite distinct from your “YES” response.

Right then, if you happen to be sitting at home reading this in a fluster, thinking “Load of old rubbish; this isn’t working for me. The pendulum isn’t doing anything” or if your responses are so similar that you can’t tell them apart, don’t worry. We’re not out of ideas just yet. If your pendulum doesn’t present you with your own personal dowsing reaction, you may simply programme it, and yourself, to give signals of your own choosing. These may be the clockwise and anti-clockwise circles mention above, or they may be something else that works for you.

In this instance, I would suggest holding the pendulum over the knee of your dominant leg (while this is likely to be the same as your dominant hand, it’s not necessarily the case. If in doubt, imagine yourself kicking a football.) Swinging the pendulum in the way that you have decided will be your “YES” response, say “This is “YES”” a number of times until you feel that you have it. Returning to the “SEARCH” position in the centre between your knees, clear your mind, as well as the pendulum. Now move the pendulum across to the second knee, set the pendulum in motion in the pre-determined pattern, saying, “This is “NO””, over and over again.

Soon, you will be able to move the pendulum over a knee at random and find that the pendulum goes into “automatic”. Now experiment with holding the pendulum in different places, between both knees for example, and ask to be shown “YES” or “NO”; you should very soon be able to elicit the desired response no matter where the pendulum is positioned at the time.
